Abstract:Colored cotton is a kind of cotton with natural color in its fiber. But the poor fiber quality and lower lint percent of the colored cotton restrict its production and commercial utilizing. In recent years, some research has been done on the improvement of the cultivars of colored cotton, and some progresses have been acquired. But the limited color types and the instability of the fiber color of some varieties are the obstacle for development of colored cotton. The main factors which influence the color of the cotton fiber have not been illuminated. In this article, two brown lines (B263S08 and brown 1-61),two green lines(CC28 and S9708),and white fiber control TM-1 were grown and investigated in Anyang,Henan,China in 2004.The intraday flower of every line was tagged and covered with the black bag from-5 to 55 day post anthesis (DPA) respectively. After their bolls opened completely, the fiber was picked up and the fiber color observed. The MICROTEK Phantom 9800XL scanner was used to measure the value of redness, greenness, blueness in the fiber of each treatment by the parameters of r/(g+b),b/(r+g),g/(r+b). The fiber samples was also sent to test the fiber quality on the HVI900. The data was analyzed by SPSS 11.0.
The results showed that the brown and green colors of the fibers maintained their primary colors after their boll shading from-5 to 55 day post anthesis (DPA). However the brightness, deepness and the stability of the color fibers in various shading periods were different.
The color of the brown cotton being shaded before 25 DPA was slight lighter than that of the control, while the color of the green cotton after boll shading in different periods were darker than the control. Shading had influenced the fiber quality of the white and colored cotton. The fiber being shaded from 5 ~ 15 DPA was thicker than that of the control. The fiber length and strength with boll shading at 30 DPA were better than those of the control. Shading after 30 DPA,the fiber length, strength and uniformity became worse and worse until they got the weakest quality at 45~50 DPA. This research is significant to stabilize the fiber color and improve the fiber quality.
